DECATUR, Ala. – The University of West Alabama softball team picked up its second win of the season with a 7-5 decision over Wayne State in the closing game of Day 1 of the UAH Charger Chillout after dropping the opener 2-0 to Indianapolis. UWA improves to 2-4 on the season.
A 5-run, fourth inning and solid pitching performances from
Jessica Brock and
Hannah Griffin sealed the victory over the Warriors.
Back-to-back, 2-RBI hits from
Brittany Smith and
Rebecca Schick led the Red and White in the frame. The duo's feat closed out the scoring in the inning. The pair were the only Tigers to register multiple hits in the contest – both going 2-for-2 at the dish with multiple RBI.
Angela Arredondo broke the 1-all tie as the Mesa, Ariz., native scored on a bases loaded walk.
WSU managed to pull within a run in the top half of the fifth inning, scoring four runs. UWA reliever Griffin entered to pitch the final 2.1 innings and held the Green and Gold at bay the remainder of the contest to pick up the save.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the sixth as Schick scored
Tamara Vickers on a single to the left side.
Jessica Brock (2-1) tossed 4.2 innings in the win – allowing five runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout.
Tigers struggled from the plate in the opener tallying just a pair of hits – both coming off the bat of
Tamara Vickers. UWA had 11 batters fan in the outing and left seven runners stranded on the base paths.
Kristen Skinner tossed six innings in the loss – her first of the season - as the Toxey, Ala., native allowed two runs on five hits. The senior recorded posted a 6-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio in the contest.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as UWA faces Bellarmine at 12:30 p.m. and then Northern Kentucky at 2:30 p.m.
