MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team extended its winning streak to 18 matches and advanced to the semi-finals of the 2014 Gulf South Conference Tennis Championship Tournament by defeating Christian Brothers, 5-0, Thursday at Lagoon Park.
The 25
th-ranked Tigers will play 13
th-ranked Valdosta State, 5-1 winners over North Alabama, Friday at 9 a.m. for an opportunity to advance to the tournament finals Saturday morning. The other semi-final match features West Florida and Delta State.
West Alabama is 22-1 on the season. Christian Brothers ended its season 0-7.
West Alabama swept the three doubles matches (8-1, 8-0, 8-0), allowing singles wins by
Nestor Vargas and
Manuel Grossmann at No. 1 and 6, respectively, to seal the deal for the Tigers. Vargas, ranked No. 18 in the nation, dispatched Austin Essary, 6-2, 6-1. Grossmann took care of Sammy Sriraman 6-0, 6-0.
