Tigers Come from Behind, Defeat Statesmen 41-38 on the Road

CLEVELAND, Miss. – West Alabama came from 18 points behind in the fourth quarter, capping it with a 23-yard field goal by Mark Grant with 19 seconds left, to defeat Delta State, 41-38, in Gulf South Conference football action Saturday at Parker-McCool Stadium.

"This is exactly the kind of win we needed," UWA head coach Brett Gilliland said. "Our kids would not quit and they had every reason to.

"We got down 18 and our kids didn't flinch," Gilliland said. "We stepped up and made the plays we needed to make to win the football game. I am so proud of this team and staff."

Grant's game-winner was his first field goal of the season. The preseason All-GSC kicker has been sidelined with a nagging injury since prior to summer training camp. The field goal also lifted Grant to second on the UWA career scoring list with 179 points. Mitch Warfield (05-08) holds the record with 180 points.

"I don't deserve the credit for this. Anybody on this team can make a 23-yard field goal," Grant said. "The credit goes to the guys who have been kicking while I have been out. I just wanted to get it off in time."

Delta State completed four touchdown passes for 50 yards or more and another for 15 yards to take the 35-17 lead after three quarters and hand freshman quarterback Tyler Cameron the DSU record for scoring passes in a game by a Statesmen freshman.

When the dust cleared, however, it was West Alabama's freshman quarterback Harry Satterwhite who refused to be rattled and made the plays when It counted in just his second collegiate start.

"I just got in the huddle and said 'let's do what we do, this is what makes it fun,'" Satterwhite said. "We trust the scheme and eventually I know guys are going to get open."

Satterwhite was 25-of-41 for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the game, but more impressively the Mobile, Alabama product completed 12-of-17 for 159 yards and all three of his scoring passes in the last nine minutes of the game.

Two of those scoring passes came 10 seconds apart early in fourth quarter. Satterwhite connected with Courtney Foy on a 5-yard scoring toss with 9:02 left to play, and then following an onside kick recovery by Terry Samuel, he hit Daryl Collins in stride for a 48-yard TD pass with 8:52 left to make it 35-31 Statesmen.

Almost lost in the late-game heroics were a pair of long scoring plays by Tiger speedster Tyreek Hill. The senior from Douglas, Georgia scored on a 62-yard run after a backwards pass from Satterfield and then on a 78-yard punt return just over two minutes later as Delta State took a 17-14 lead into the half. Hill finished with 303 all-purpose yards for the game.

Vince Sciorrotta made a 30-yard field goal for Delta State with 4:37 left, but Satterwhite took control of the Tiger huddle after Robert Myers scooped a DSU squib kick and returned it 24 yards to the Delta State 46.

Seven plays later, on fourth-and-goal from the Statesmen 5-yard line, Satterwhite lofted a touchdown pass to Randy Satterfield to tie the game at 38-38.

"Randy split the two safeties and I just gave him a high ball because I know he can go up and get it," Satterwhite said.

Three plays later Felix Woods intercepted Cameron at the DSU 33-yard line for his first collegiate interception. Tyler Rogers and Rashaad Lee combined for 27 yards to set up Grant's game-winner.

"I was playing inside leverage and knew I had help over the top from (safety) Brandon Lilly," Woods said. "It just bounced off the receiver and I went and got it."

Delta State rang up 614 total yards and the Tigers had 441, 218 in the fourth quarter.

Quentin Harton led West Alabama defenders with 8.5 tackles and Lilly followed with 7.5. Jamel Dennis had 9.5 tackles for Delta State to lead all tacklers.

West Alabama stays on the road next week, traveling to Valdosta State for the GSC-TV ESPN3 game of the week.
