Coach Frank North Passes Away at Age 92

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Frank North, the all-time winningest coach in the history of the University of West Alabama football program, passed away Tuesday at age 92.
 
North guided the Tigers to 31 victories from 1979 to 1983, turning around a program that had fallen on tough times. With a keen eye for talent, North recruited and coached 12 players at UWA that would go on to play professional football.
 
North was born and raised in Sweetwater, Tennessee. He served in the United States Navy during World War II on board the USS Herzog.
 
He attended Hiawassee Junior College and Tennessee Tech University, playing football at both schools on the way to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
 
Prior to West Alabama (then Livingston University) he coached at Marion Military Institute. He finished his coaching career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

Coach North is survived by his wife of 73 years, Fannie Rhea North of Alpharetta, Georgia; children, Frank North, Jr. and his wife, Patsy, of Montgomery, Jerry North and his wife, Rebecca, of Alpharetta, Georgia. He also has two grandchildren, Brett and Lisa.
 
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 21 at Ingram Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to noon. Funeral Services will follow in the funeral home chapel at noon.
