University of West Alabama Athletics

Fred Hughston played both basketball and baseball for the University of West Alabama from 1953-1957. As a four-year starter in basketball, Hughston averaged 25 points a game for his career, and scored 47 points against Pensacola College in 1956. After graduation he signed with the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball Association. Following his professional basketball career, he returned to Alabama as a coach for two years at Carroll High in Ozark. He then moved on to the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega.
