LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The University of West Alabama women's soccer team dropped its final decision of the 2011 campaign with a 2-1, hard fought loss to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
PBA (7-7-1) scored its only two goals early in the first 45 minutes of play. Ashley Shoaf opened the scoring on a Marianne Harnes assisted goal in the 17th minute. Harnes crossed the ball in from the right side for Shoaf to tap the ball into the bottom right corner. Meagan Phillips increased the lead to 2-0 three minutes later on a rebound off the crossbar from the foot of Juliet Waller.
The Tigers fired off six shots in the opening half outshooting the Sailfish by two, but the Red and White couldn't find a way to push a goal across PBA keeper Allison Fox.
After increasing its offensive pressure in the second stanza,
Nicki Gears finally broke through with a goal in the 67th minute of the contest.
Giselle Rios assisted on Gears' team-leading ninth goal of the season as the ball was crossed in from the left for Gears to tap it in the bottom left corner.
UWA attempted 14 shots in the outing with nine on goal, including six in the second half, while the Blue and White tried five shots in the match with four on goal.
Jess Martin (6-12) totaled a pair of saves in the loss while Fox recorded eight in the win.
UWA finishes its inaugural season with a 6-12 overall record.
