Gary Johnston notches his first-ever award after leading UWA to its first win of the season in a 42-35 home triumph over Tarleton State. The junior played a direct part in four of the Tigers’ six touchdowns led by three tossing scores. The Gulf Shores, Ala., native completed 16-of-26 passes for 217 yards and also racked up a game-high 106 rushing yards and a TD on 21 carries. Johnston participated in 47 of West Alabama’s 73 total plays and guided the squad to its game-winning drive which culminated in the go-ahead TD with 53 seconds left to play.
