UWA Outlasts West Geogia

First GSC win of the season

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team claimed its first victory in Gulf South Conference action with a 50-49 victory over West Georgia on Saturday evening. UWA (4-16, 1-3 GSC) outscored the Wolves 31-23 in the second half to earn the win. UWG falls to 8-12 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Thomassian Wyatt got off a jumper with two ticks on the clock, for the Wolves, but the shot rimmed out and sailed out of rebounds as time expired, securing the win.

Latashia Greer paced the Red and White in the scoring column and on the glass as she tallied her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers connected on four straight free throws down the stretch. Erin Courington and Nicole Dames each toed the charity stripe in the final minutes. With UWA trailing 49-46 with just under three minutes remaining, Courington pulled UWA within two connecting on her two attempts. Dames stepped to the stripe on minute later and knocked down two shots to put the Red and White up. Dames finished the night with nine points as Courington tallied five points.

UWG leading by nine points, its largest of the half, witnessed its deficit dwindle behind a 9-0 run as UWA knotted the contest at 35-all. During the scoring spurt, Dakota Powell, who finished with nine points, and Dames each connected on three-pointers and Greer and Larrenda Rockwell hit shots from the free throw line. Powell dished out a team-leading four assists to go along with her nine points. Rockwell posted six points in the contest.

Wyatt led the Wolves in scoring with 13 points while Whitley Mayberry chimed in 11 points. Alexis Pace led the charge on the boards with nine rebounds for the Red and Blue.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 30 as UWA travels to the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Tip-off at Spragins Hall is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game will be carried on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9-FM and at www.uwaathletics.com.
