LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Nationally ranked West Florida spoiled the University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis team's home opener as the Argonauts blanked the Tiger women 9-0 and claimed an 8-1 decision in the men's match.
Both UWA squads dropped to 3-3 on the season heading into Saturday's match with Tuskegee University in Demopolis, Ala. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
The lone UWA point came at the No. 3 doubles spot as the duo of James Gardner and Juan Felipe Tellez topped the UWF pairing of Patrick Bateman and Sean Gunnels, 8-3. The Tiger tandem of Danish Ahmad and Lucas Cruz battled UWF's Andrey Pozhidaev and Lukas Larsson before falling 8-4. In singles play, UWF's Bateman outlasted Gardner at the four-spot, 7-5, 6-4. At the top spot, Tellez fell to UWF's Kevin Ducros, 6-4, 6-1. Wade Covington and Cruz fell at the No. 5 and 6 spots 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3 respectively.
In the Women's match, UWF swept UWA 8-0 in all three doubles points. In singles action, the Tigers claimed just six games in the entire match. Angy Cuellar, Polina Babkina and Brittany Harris grabbed a game from their respective foe. Emily Gerding fell 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
