UWA Women Clinch GSC Tournament Berth




CARROLLTON, Ga. –
The University of West Alabama women's basketball team held off West Georgia 52-49 on Saturday evening to earn a berth in the 2010 Gulf South Conference Tournament in Southaven, Miss. The win improves UWA to 8-18 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
 
The Red and White advance to the GSC Tournament for the fifth straight season and seven of the last nine seasons, all under Head Coach Amanda Marks. It's the 16th overall appearance in the conference tournament for the Red and White. 

The Tigers opened the contest with a 20-5 run over the first six minutes of the contest. Latashia Greer led the way during the charge, posting 10 of her 18 points during the run. Dakota Powell supplied seven points during the scoring stretch to spark her 13 point effort in the contest. The double digit scoring efforts marked the 13th for Greer and the sixth for Powell. 

Keiara Middleton also tallied double figures in the outing with 11 points along with 10 rebounds. The double-double is the first of the season for the sophomore guard. Jenni Thomley pulled down a team best 11 boards in the outing. 

UWG (9-15, 2-6 GSC) outscored the Tigers 18-7 the remainder of the half to head into the locker room down 27-23. The Wolves worked the four point halftime deficit down with Anelia Murray giving the Red and Blue their only lead of the game, 31-29, on a layup at the 15:12 mark. Greer put the Tigers back on top, 33-31, with a layup with just under 12 minutes to play. UWA never trailed the remainder of the way. 

Whitley Mayberry and Williams paced the offensive attack for UWG each posting 11 points in the outing while Murray added 10 points. 

West Alabama returns to action Saturday, Feb. 27 as UWA closes out the regular season playing host to the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The game will be available via live stats and a live audio stream at www.uwaathletics.com.
