DEMOPOLIS, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis team picked up wins over in-state foe Tuskegee University on Saturday in a match played at the Sportsplex in Demopolis, Ala. The men's squad claimed an 8-1 decision while the UWA women edged TU, 5-4.
In the men's match, UWA picked up a pair of doubles points by default. The lone doubles match played was won by the Tiger tandem of Wade Covington and Lucas Nunes, 8-3, over TU's Marco Jagodic and Elijah Pugh. In singles play, Juan Felipe Tellez cruised by Jagodic, 6-2, 6-1 at the top position. UWA's Alvaro de la Torre notched his first win of the season after outlasting TU's Kuozai Sithde, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5. Covington, Nunes and Lucas Cruz claimed walk over wins. The lone TU point came at No. 3 as Pugh downed UWA's Wes Taylor, 6-0, 6-1.
In the women's match, UWA took a 2-0 advantage after doubles play. The Tiger pairing of Angy Cuellar and Katy Shoptaugh turned back TU's duo of Jasmine Scott and Sunny Willoughby, 9-8. Tuskegee claimed the top doubles point after Shaneka Knight and Constanza Arconda squeezed by UWA's Brittany Harris and Emily Gerding, 9-8. In singles play, Harris and Gerding earned walk over wins at No. 5 and 6. Brittney Bowden turned in a win at No. 3 after Arconda retired in the second set.
UWA returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27, facing Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. at 9 a.m. before taking on Tougaloo in Jackson, Miss. at 2 p.m.
