Tiger Netters Begin 2010 Slate

Glen Fanelli Previews the Tiger men

Glen Fanelli Previews the UWA women

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama tennis teams will open the 2010 season on Friday, Feb, 5, traveling to Jackson, Miss. to face Belhaven College. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m.

The Tigers will stay in the capital city of the Magnolia state on Saturday to face off with NCAA Division III foe Millsaps College at 9:30 a.m. before closing out the weekend against Jackson State at 2:30 p.m.

The UWA men look to parlay the momentum off of last season's NCAA Regional appearance. Last season, the Red and White finished with a school-record 18 wins. Third-year head coach Glen Fanelli returns six players from last year's squad. Junior James Gardner, who played at the top position a season ago, along with the squad's lone senior Danish Ahmad will pace the line up at the top positions.

On the women's side, Fanelli has a host of new players on the roster that will be looked upon to step right into the line up. Junior college transfers Brittney Bowden and Katy Shoptaugh will be inserted into the top of the singles positions. The UWA women have made great strides over the past two seasons with back-to-back appearances in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

UWA will open the home schedule on Friday, Feb. 12, against former GSC foe Lincoln Memorial.
