TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis teams have strung together three straight wins after ousting in-state foe Tuskegee University on Saturday. The men's squad blanked TU 9-0, while the UWA women turned back the Tigers of TU, 6-3.
The Tigers got off to a fast start, claiming both doubles points that were played. UWA was awarded three points due to forfeits in the match. The Tiger tandem of James Gardner and Juan Felipe Tellez edged TU 8-6 at the top spot. Benny Delgado Rochas and Wade Covington cruised at No. 2 with an 8-2 win.
Gardner, Tellez, Rochas and Lucas Cruz turned in pro-set wins in singles, while Danish Ahmad and Wes Taylor scored walk overs.
In the women's tilt, the two squads split the top two doubles as the Red and White duo of Angy Cuellar and Brittney Bowden posted an 8-2 win decision over TU. UWA grabbed the second doubles point thanks to a forfeit. Polina Babkina and Katy Shoptaugh were also awarded wins due to forfeits. Emily Gerding turned in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sunny Willoughby, while Bowden registered a straight sets win at No.
UWA returns home on March 25, hosting Delta State in a 2 p.m. match.
