Dahlonega, Ga. – The University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis teams came away with a split on Thursday at North Georgia. The Tiger men earned a 6-3 win, while the women came up on the short end, 5-4.
In the men's match, UWA fell behind 2-1 after doubles competition. The lone Tiger point came from the duo of James Gardner and Juan Felipe Tellez as they topped NG's Adrien Saulais and Parker LaSure. The Tigers rebounded to take five of the six points in singles action. Danish Ahmad, Lucas Cruz, and Lucas Nunes picked up straight set wins in the No. 4-6 positions. Gardner dropped his first set but knocked out Daniel Aquilon in the three-set win.
On the women's side, the UWA women claimed their lone doubles point at the No. 3 spot. The Tiger tandem of Angy Cuellar and Brittney Bowden turned back NG's Ashley Marie Jordan and Sara Vaughters in convincing fashion, 8-2. Katy Shoptaugh, Brittany Harris, and Emily Gerding made quick work of NG in the final three spots during singles competition.
Both squads will return to action this weekend traveling to Atlanta, Ga., to take part in the Morehouse Invitational.
