UWA Tennis Sweeps On Sunday

ATLANTA, Ga.  The University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis teams blanked a pair of region foes on Sunday at the Morehouse Invitational.  The Tiger men ousted host-Morehouse 9-0, while the UWA women downed Clark Atlanta by the identical score.

 

In the men's match, UWA (10-3) swept all three doubles positions to gain the advantage heading into singles.  At No. 2, the UWA tandem of James Gardner and Juan Felipe Tellez made quick work of MC's Michael Steward and Johan Oliver, 8-0.  Alvaro De La Torre was extended to a third set at the No. 1 singles spot, but finished off Michael Cutrer in a pro-set tie breaker.  Wes Taylor also played a three-set marathon to claim a win at No. 6.  Lucas Cruz topped Oliver, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.  Gardner, Tellez and Nunes all notched wins on their respective courts.

 

The women's match with CAU resembled the men's contest as UWA (9-4) swept the doubles points.  The Tiger duo of Angy Cuellar and Bowden edged CAU 9-8.  UWA's Katy Shoptaugh and Polina Babkina were credited with a walk over win in doubles as was Courtney McDonald claimed a walk over win at No. 6 singles.  Shoptaugh also topped her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.  Emily Gerding, Brittany Harris and Bowden all added wins in singles.

 

UWA returns home to face NCAA Division I foe Western Kentucky on Tuesday, March 9.  Match time is set for 2 p.m.
