UWA Readies For NCAA Men's Tennis Tourney

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team will begin its march towards a national championship on Thursday, May 6, as UWA takes on in-state rival UAH in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional I in Valdosta, Ga.  Match time is set for 9 a.m. CST on the campus of Valdosta State University.

The Tigers (22-9) are making their second-straight NCAA Regional appearance and the program's second overall.  Last year, the Red and White trekked to Boca Raton, Fla. and were ousted by Rollins College in the opener.  UWA put together an impressive resume in 2010 with a 22-9 record to earn a berth into the 62-team field.  Both squads will be vying for their first win in the NCAA Tournament.  UAH (10-8) is making its fifth appearance in the regional round.  The winner of the UWA-UAH match will face the host-Blazers, who received a first-round bye, on Friday at 1 p.m. CST.

UWA will look to avenge a 6-3 setback to the Chargers during the regular season in Huntsville.  UWA and UAH were two of six Gulf South Conference teams selected for post season play.  West Florida will host one of the regionals along with VSU.  Ouachita Baptist and Harding will represent the GSC West.

In the other half of the bracket, Rollins and Fort Valley State will duel at 1 p.m. on Thursday.  The survivor of that match will take on Lynn on Friday.  The finals are set for Saturday, May 8 at 9 a.m. CST.

The winner of the South I Regional will advance to the round of 16 in Altamonte Park, Fla. on May 12-15.
