CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team dropped its final Gulf South Conference match of the season in a 2-1 decision at West Georgia to fall to 6-11 on the campaign and 1-4 in the conference. UWG improved to 6-9-1overall and 2-3-1 in the GSC.
The Wolves struck first in the contest as Anna Cusick scored in the 16th minute on an unassisted goal. The goal marked the second of the season for Cusick.
Nicki Gears scored her eighth goal of the season knotting the contest at 1-all on a header in the 31st minute off an assist from
Sam Cable. Gears' nine scores stands as most on the squad while Cable's assist is the first of the season for the Las Vegas, Nev, native.
The score remained tied through the final 14 minutes of the opening half and the first couple minutes of the second stanza until Cydney Raymond scored her seventh goal of the season to break the tie in the 52nd minute off an assist from Cusick.
The Tigers attempted eight shots in the evening with seven coming on goal. Gears fired off five of the shots on the night with the remaining three coming off the foot of Jet Amerg.
Jess Martin (6-11) was saddled with the loss in net. The Norcross, Ga., product tallied eight saves in the effort while UWG keeper Mary Laza posted six saves.
West Alabama concludes the 2011 season on Saturday, Oct. 29 as the Tigers host Palm Beach Atlantic. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. Live stats only will be available for the conest.
