Gears Lifts Tiger Soccer to 3-2 OT Win over Alabama State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Nicki Gears' goal in overtime brings the University of West Alabama women's soccer team within one game of .500 with a 3-2 victory over Division I Alabama State in overtime. The goal gives Gears the team-lead in goals with five on the season. West Alabama improves to 5-6 on the season while ASU falls to 1-12.

The game-winner came off an assist from Vicky Petrova in the 95th minute. Petrova crossed the ball in from the right side as Gears put it past ASU keeper Kylee Hathaway and into the left corner. The assist is the seventh of the season for Petrova and leads the squad.

Gears set the table for the Tigers early in the contest with a goal in the 9th minute off of an assist from Jade Newton. Gears took Newton's assist from the left side and tapped the ball into the bottom, right corner of the goal.

The goal stayed the difference through the remainder of the opening half.

Giselle Rios placed the Tigers up 2-0 midway through the second half as she took a rebounded ball off of Hathaway to score in the top right corner.

Lenna Lamas scored the first goal for ASU in the 77th minute from the right side of the box. The Hornets tied the contest at 2-all in the 81st minute on an unassisted goal by Franka Schauss that fell into the right corner.

Jess Martin (5-6) claimed the win in net. The Norcross, Ga., native recorded five saves in the triumph. ASU's Hathaway (1-9) tallied 12 saves in the decision.

The Red and White fired off 23 shots on the evening – second highest on the season behind 26 shots in a 5-0 win over Tennessee Temple.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 as the Tigers travel to Cleveland, Miss., in search of its first conference win in program history. Kickoff at Delta State is scheduled for 2 p.m.
