CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team picked up its first Gulf South Conference victory on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers (6-6, 1-2 GSC) defeated Delta State 1-0. The victory comes after setbacks in conference play to West Florida and UAH.
The win is the third consecutive for the Red and White this season.
The goal came off the foot of
Nicki Gears, who stands as the team leader in goals scored with six. Gears' shot came within the 58th minute from an assist by
Vicky Petrova past DSU keeper Kelsey Elling.
UWA attempted 15 shots in the contest with six coming on goal. The 15 shots stand as the fourth most in program history and the most in a conference outing.
Giselle Rios challenged the Green and White defense with four shots – three coming on goal.
The Green and White made a push at forcing overtime late in the contest – attempting four shots in the final 16 minutes, but the Tiger defense held the Statesmen out as UWA keeper
Jess Martin (6-6) held DSU at bay by recording six saves in the contest.
The Lady Statesmen were held to just 10 shots in the outing with six coming on goal.
West Alabama returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 11 as the Tigers host Christian Brothers. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
