HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of West Alabama tennis teams swept their matches with Tougaloo by scores of 9-0, a nice recovery from earlier in the day when the men's team lost to William Carey 7-2 and the women's squad fell 8-1. The gentlemen now sit at 3-4 while the ladies also hold that mark.
In the win over Tougaloo,
Natalia Cardenas and
Emily Gerding won their doubles match by an 8-0 score, and
Katy Shoptaugh and
Dasha Popova teamed up for an 8-1 doubles victory. Shoptaugh and Gerding went on to win in straight sets while not dropping a game in singles play, and
Dasha Popova gave up one game in winning 6-1, 6-0.
Courtney McDonald was a 6-3, 6-2 winner in singles action, and
Roanna Council won 6-2, 6-0.
The duo of
Angy Cuellar and McDonald won by forfeit in doubles, while a forfeit gave Cardenas a win in singles.
On the men's side against Tougaloo,
Juan Felipe Tellez and
Lucas Cruz defeated their doubles opponent by an 8-2 score, and with an 8-1 tally,
Santiago Lopez and
Lucas Nunes also won in doubles action. Nunes and
Wes Taylor were tops in singles play as each won and did not lose a game. Cruz was a 6-1, 6-2 victor, and
Clay Cooke triumphed in his singles match by a 6-1, 6-0 count.
Vollor Halpin also win in singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score.
Taylor and Cooke received a forfeit victory in doubles, and a forfeit went the way of Lopez in singles action.
Against William Carey, the women's team secured its lone point from a
Dasha Popova victory as she was a 6-2, 6-0 winner in the six position. The men's team received a point in doubles action and got a 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory in singles play from Tellez in the three spot.
The Tigers hit the courts again Saturday for a 10 a.m. against Louisiana College.
