LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama tennis teams fell on Sunday to North Alabama as the ladies lost by a 7-2 score and the men dropped a narrow 5-4 decision. The women now sit at 8-7 (3-2 Gulf South Conference) while the men own a 7-8 (0-4 GSC) mark.
The Tigers trailed 2-1 going into singles play on the men's side as the duo of
Wade Covington and
Santiago Lopez earned UWA a point with an 8-1 victory in doubles, and the two squads split singles action to give UNA the victory.
The match shifted in the No. 2 singles as Covington fell in a tough match 6-2, 7-6, putting up a valiant effort but unable to force a third set. Lopez won from the four spot 6-1, 7-6 (12-10), while Luis Ruiz (6-0, 7-6) and
Lucas Cruz (7-6, 6-1) gave UWA its other two points from the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
The victory moves Cruz just shy of the century mark with 98 career wins.
Dasha Popova won 6-2, 2-6 (10-6) in the No. 5 singles on the women's side, and teammate
Courtney McDonald (6-4, 6-4) was victorious in the No. 6 singles.
The women's team returns to action on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. contest at Montevallo while the men are off until Thursday when both teams travel to LeMoyne-Owen.
