Tiger Tennis Continues Winning Ways

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Both teams improved their winning streak to six matches, and the West Alabama tennis squads swept visiting Mississippi College on Tuesday afternoon as the ladies won 9-0 while the men won 6-3. With the victories, the women improve to 14-7 and the men move to 13-8.

The women's team began its fifth shutout in its last six matches with a sweep of the doubles points. All three duos – Angy Cuellar and Emily Gerding, Natalia Cardenas and Dasha Popova, and Katy Shoptaugh and Courtney McDonald – won by an 8-3 score.

Dominating the singles as well, the No. 1 and No. 2 – Cuellar and Gerding, respectively – won without dropping a game 6-0, 6-0, while Cardenas was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at the three position. No. 6 McDonald registered an 8-0 victory, Popova won 8-1 in the five, and Shoptaugh was an 8-2 from the fourth position.

In men's action, the Tigers had to respond from a 2-1 hole after doubles as the pair of Wade Covington and Luis Ruiz was the only grouping to register a point after its 8-2 victory.

And respond the Red and White did, dropping only one point in singles play. Lucas Cruz had the most dominating effort, winning 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 6 position, while No. 5 Ruiz won 6-0, 6-2 as did Covington in the four spot. Santiago Lopez won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1, and Juan Felipe Tellez won from the two position by scores of 6-3, 7-6.

The Tigers will hit the road for a pair of matches to wrap up the regular season before the women take part in the Gulf South Conference Tournament the weekend of Apr. 15. The Tigers will be the No. 3 from the East Division.
