Tiger Soccer Falls 2-1 in 2OT to UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Despite eight shots on goal, the University of West Alabama women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Alabama-Huntsville in double overtime at Tiger Stadium to open Gulf South Conference action.

After UAH (2-5) took a 1-0 lead in at the intermission, Nicola Gibson tied the contest at 1-all in the 67th minute. Gibson's goal – the third of her career- came as she headed the ball past Charger keeper Iris Gunnarsdottir on a corner kick from Vicky Petrova.

The score stayed knotted through the remainder of regulation and the first 10-minute, OT period. UWA keeper Jess Martin kept the Red and White in the outing during the opening extra period as the Norcross, Ga., freshman hauled in two of her four saves during the stretch.

The Chargers broke the 1-1 tie in the 115th minute of the contest as UAH's Cady Reisman scored the golden goal to secure the victory on an assist from Luting Sun.

Gunnarsdottir (2-5) totaled seven saves in the win for Blue and White as Martin falls to 3-4 in the decision.

UAH's first goal came in the 32nd minute on a header by Marie Blunt. Becca Mauldin recorded the assist on the play.

Each team logged nine shots on the night with a combined 18 corner kicks.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 as the Tigers travel to Pensacola, Fla., for a match against conference foe West Florida. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
