PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team falls to 3-5 on the season with a 5-1 loss at West Florida on Saturday evening. The setback is the second in conference play for the Tigers. UWF improved to 3-2-2 and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference.
Tina Murray and Aveann Douglas each posted a pair of goals in the contest as Murray scored the first two for the Argos. Murray's first score came in the 15th minute as Douglas led her teammate with a long pass up the right side line. Murray added her second goal seven minutes later – this time on an assist from Meredith Testa. UWF added a third goal in the period as Douglas scored her first in the 29th minute also on an assist from Testa.
Daniele Cruz Mejia extended the Argos lead to 4-0 with her first goal on a free kick from 30 yards out. Murray and Alexis Garrand assisted on the score for Mejia.
The Tigers logged their first goal in the 81st minute as
Natalie Perry scored on a loose ball in the box. The goal was the second of the season for the Mobile, Ala., native.
Douglas closed out the scoring with her second goal as Testa pushed the ball up the left line and through the UWA defense to Douglas.
UWF attempted 26 shots on the evening as
Jess Martin (3-5) recorded 11 saves in the loss. UWA also recorded a team save in the outing.
West Alabama returns to action on Friday, Sept. 30 as the Tigers travel outside of conference play to Young Harris College. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
