Tigers Fall Short at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A valiant effort falls short as the University of West Alabama women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight contest as UWA (6-11, 1-5 GSC) fell 62-59 at West Florida on Sunday afternoon. UWF improved to 7-11 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

The Tigers, which trailed by as much as 12 points in the second half, chipped away at the Argos' lead and pulled within 62-57 with 16 seconds left in the game on a Danielle Cole 3-pointer. Following a UWF turnover, Nikkia Jordan's trey wouldn't fall, but Keiara Middleton put back found the bottom of the net – pulling the Red and White to 62-59 - with just one tick left on the clock.

After shooting just 30-percent in the opening half, the Tigers upped their shooting percentage to 38-percent for the game after connecting on 43-percent in the second half.

Jamie Gunter was one of three Tigers in double figures posting her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Columbus, Miss., native also blocked five shots – surpassing Synthea Reed's previous team-leading mark of four. For the second straight outing, Jordan led the Red and White with 15 points while Cole added 11 points.

Hattiesburg, Miss., product, Jordan scored 10 of her 15-point total in the second stanza while eight of Jordan's total also came in the half.

UWA led a majority of the first half, but following a long cold spell by both squads, UWF took a 21-20 lead with 6:30 before the intermission. The Argos closed out the first 20 minutes with a 12-3 run to head into the locker room up 32-23. UWF capitalized on its nine point lead in the early minutes of the second half, pushing the margin out to as much as 12 points.

Octavia Bearden led the Blue and Green with 20 points and 13 rebounds – all on the defensive end. Sher'Ryan Scott added 19 points while Hanna Vette chipped in 17 points off the bench. UWF shot 53-percent for the game, including 42-perecent from behind the arc.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 as the Red and White welcome West Georgia to Pruitt Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. The game can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com.
