LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Looking to extend its win streak against West Georgia, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. against the Wolves. Air time of the Gulf South Conference contest, on ESPN 104.9 FM, begins 15 minutes prior to tip-off.
UWA (6-11, 1-5 GSC) has won the last four outings against the Red and Blue heading into the contest.
The Tigers look to snap a four-game, conference losing skid as the Red and White have dropped five of the six GSC outings this season. Their lone conference victory came on Jan. 7 against in-state foe North Alabama in Livingston.
UWG also enters riding a skid as the Wolves dropped outings at Valdosta State (63-46) and against West Florida (48-44). The last Red and Blue victory came at Christian Brothers on Jan. 14 in a 52-47 decision. The only other conference triumph for West Georgia was against North Alabama on Jan. 5 by a 67-64 result.
Both squads enter the Saturday contest eerily close in the statistical columns. UWA ranks sixth in the GSC in scoring offense at 60.6 points per game while the Wolves are seventh at 56.1 on the season. UWG does, however, hold an advantage in scoring defense allowing just 58.7 points on the campaign – which ranks third in the conference – while the Tigers are sixth at 62.4 per contest.
Brittany Weathers is ranked among the top five in the GSC in scoring and rebounds with 13.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game – leading the Tigers on the season. The scoring average ranks fifth while the rebounding stands second.
Nikkia Jordan along with Weathers is also averaging double digits scoring with 11.5 points – 12th best in the conference.
Four Wolves are ranked among the top 20 scorers in the conference led by Shunice Hardy's 13.1 points per game – seventh in the GSC. Money Peoples is averaging 11.4 points – 14th in the conference – while Breonna Mosley and Krystal Delph are 19th and 20th respectively, hovering around the 9.0 average.
West Alabama begins the second half swing of conference play on Thursday, Feb. 2 as the Tigers visit Alabama-Huntsville. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com.
