UWA Women’s Soccer Falls on Senior Day

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team fell to the West Georgia Wolves on Sunday, 3-0, in a match played at Tiger Stadium.

On a day when UWA honored its lone senior, Jet Amerg, the Tigers failed to overcome two first-half goals in the 3-0 loss. West Alabama falls to 6-6-3 on the year overall but keeps its 4-1-1 Gulf South Conference mark intact due to the GSC's conference alignment rules.

The Wolves seized control of the match early on during Sunday's game when Mariela Ortega scored a goal at the 32-minute mark off the assist from Myra Fisher. That early score was followed by the first of two goals on the day by Caroline Woodhead. This one came just three minutes after Ortega's score to give UWG a sizable 2-0 halftime lead.

Neither team found much offense in the second period until Woodhead knocked in the game's final goal at the 66-minute mark to insure the victory for the Wolves.

West Alabama lost Sunday despite registering nearly twice as many shots on goal (7) as UWG (4). Forward Nicki Gears totaled a game-high six shots on the day, while Jess Martin picked up three saves.

The Tigers now have a week off before battling with West Florida next Sunday, Oct. 21 at Tiger Stadium. Kick off for the contest is slated for 1 p.m.
