MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis teams picked up two wins in dominating fashion Thursday afternoon as both squads took 9-0 triumphs over Christian Brothers.
The Tiger women came out of the gate strong, picking up three wins on the doubles courts. The top tandem of
Angy Cuellar and
Dasha Popova ousted their counterparts 8-2, before teammates
Emily Gerding and
Courtney McDonald took an 8-0 triumph at the second position. CBU then forfeited the third spot to put the score at 3-0.
UWA then continued its dominance on the singles courts as the Tigers took wins at every position. At the first three courts, Cuellar won 6-2, 6-0, while teammates
Natalia Cardenas and
Jill Furlong each took straight-set wins. With the match in hand, the final three courts were then forfeited to push the final Tiger advantage to 9-0.
It was much of the same on the men's side as UWA dominated the Buccaneers for the 9-0 triumph. The Tiger team of
Nestor Vargas and
Anton Ivanov started the day with an 8-1 win at the first doubles position followed by another 8-1 UWA victory at the second court from
Adam Drysdale and
Honorio Fernandez.
After a forfeit at the third doubles court, the Tiger men headed to the singles courts needing just two wins to claim the match. UWA did just that with victories at the top three courts. Vargas ousted his counterpart, 6-1, 6-0, before Drysdale and Ivanov claimed 6-0, 6-0 wins at the second and third courts.
With the win, the UWA men move to 7-4 on the season, while the Tiger women improve to 6-5 on the year. The two teams now travel to North Alabama this Sunday to take on the Lions.
