Orr Leads UWA to Second-Straight GSC Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Head coach Graeme Orr and the University of West Alabama women's soccer team capped off a successful weekend of Gulf South Conference competition with a 3-1 victory against Christian Brothers Sunday at Tiger Stadium.

It is the second consecutive win over a GSC foe this year for the Tigers and marks the third time in school history UWA has defeated a conference opponent. With the win, West Alabama improves to 4-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the GSC.

“This weekend showed what kind of character our team has,” stated Orr. “Our squad has worked extremely hard and it is rewarding to pick up two big wins this week.”

Once again, it was sophomore Nicki Gears who led her squad to the victory. The Rippon, England native scored one goal and registered two assists to pace the Tigers. Meanwhile, teammate Lydia Sutcliffe scored her seventh goal of the season, while senior Jett Amerg tallied her first goal of 2012 in the win.

Sutcliffe's score just eight minutes into the match is what jump started the Tiger surge early in the game as she knocked it in over the head of CBU's goalkeeper Robyn Wade.

The Tigers were then able to build a sizable halftime advantage when Gears hit goal No. 11 on the season at the 24:56 mark. Up 2-0 at the break, CBU's Katelyn Graham tightened up the match with a goal at 76:50.

Amerg then sealed the match for her squad when she knocked in a shot from 25 yards out that fell in the right side of the net to give the Tigers the final advantage at 3-1.

West Alabama now travels to Montgomery, Ala., on Tuesday to face Alabama State.
