MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman defender
Lauren Tate's goal in the last minute of the game took the University of West Alabama women's soccer team (4-3-2) to a draw against Alabama State on Tuesday.
The contest marks the third overtime match of the year for the Tigers. UWA is now 0-1-2 in games that go into extra periods.
For the most part of the 90 minutes played at the ASU Soccer Complex, neither team could get much going offensively. After a scoreless first half, it was Alabama State that struck first with a goal by Alexandria Cannon at 59 minutes.
ASU held that lead for the remainder of the second half, until Tate delivered a goal off the assist from
Vicky Petrova at the 89:05 mark to take the game into overtime. Neither squad could score in the extra periods, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
West Alabama totaled 26 shots on the day, compared to just 10 from Alabama State. UWA was also the only team to register a shot in the overtime periods with three in the first and three in the second.
The Tigers now travel to Rome, Ga., to take on Shorter Friday at 4 p.m.
