UWA Hits Five Match Win Streak with 2-0 Victory Over Shorter

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama's Nicki Gears recorded her fifth game winning goal in the 33rd minute to knock off Gulf South Conference opponent Shorter 2-0 at Tiger Stadium on Friday. Gears has six goals in the last six matches; 10 on the season.

"First and foremost, our goal was to get another conference win tonight," said UWA head women's soccer coach Graeme Orr. "We didn't show our best quality tonight which is hard to do with a short turn around."

West Alabama (8-3, 3-1 GSC) tallied its sixth shutout of the year to improve to a five match win streak. Shorter (4-6, 1-2) snaps a two game win stretch.

Katy Morris tacked on her second goal of the season in the 37th minute with an assist by Lydia Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe now owns the teams second most assists with four.

The Tiger defense held the Hawks to three shots on-goal while posting nine. Starting goalkeeper Issy Foster (7-3) recorded three saves to mark her fourth shutout. She has 33 this season (.786 save percentage).

UWA returns to the pitch Sunday to host GSC foe Lee. The match is set for 1 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.

"Now we have to focus on a quality program in Lee," said Orr. "They have been a powerhouse in NAIA and we look forward to challenging the best. I know our girls will be ready because their quality and application is always spot on."
