Tigers Fall to Lee 5-3 in First Regulation Loss

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama allowed a season high of goals to fall to Lee University 5-3 in Gulf South Conference action on Sunday. It was the Tigers first loss in regulation this season snapping a five match win streak.

"We fought hard in the second half and put them under a lot of pressure," said UWA head women's soccer coach Graeme Orr.  

"We were just unable to take enough of our chances. This is a good lesson for us. Lee is a tremendous side. You don't fin four of the last five NAIA National Championships for nothing. We will just need to take the positives from today and move on to next weekend.

West Alabama (8-4, 3-2 GSC) was held to fewer shots than its opponent for the first time six matches. Lee (7-3, 4-1) posted the most shots by a Tiger opponent this season with 21 (16 on-goal) while holding the Tigers to 11 (eight on-goal).   

UWA took the first lead of the match in the second minute with a goal by Katy Morris on an assist by Nicola Gibson.

The Flames responded with three goals in the first half including two headers off of set pieces. Lee's leading scorer Summer Lanter recorded her sixth goal of the season in the 34th minute to lead 3-1 at the half.

Leah Fortune tallied two more goals in the 63rd and 75th minute. Fortune ended the match with two goals and two assists.

The Tigers answered late with a goal on a penalty kick by Lauren Tate in the 77th minute. Tate is 2-2 on penalty kicks this season.

Tori Brook tacked on the final goal in the 82nd minute marking her first of the season.

"At half time I asked for a reaction from them and that's what I got," Orr said. "This is very hard working group. This was their third game in a week and in the heat and that is very hard to do. We will be better for and will be ready next week."

Starting goalkeeper Issy Foster (7-4) ended with a season high of 11 saves. Foster has 44 saves this year.  

UWA takes to the road next to face Alabama-Huntsville in GSC play on Friday. The match is set for 5 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
