Sutcliffe and Foster Lead Tigers to UAH Shutout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – West Alabama junior midfielder Lydia Sutcliffe netted the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute to knock off Alabama-Huntsville 1-0 in Gulf South Conference action on Friday. It was Sutcliffe's sixth goal of the season; second game-winner.

"I thought we were terrific tonight at pressing the ball and winning it back quickly," said UWA head women's soccer coach Graeme Orr. "UAH is a very well coached team andthey make you work extremely hard so it was a delight to get a big road win."

The win completes a season sweep over UAH (3-7-5, 1-5-1 GSC) for West Alabama (9-4, 4-2) and improves the Tigers to a three match win streak on the road.

Sutcliffe's goal came by way of a header off of a pass from freshman midfielder Paige Almond. For Almond, it was her second assist of the year. Sutcliffe finished the match with a 1.000 shooting percentage.  

Starting freshman goalkeeper Issy Foster (8-4) completed five saves to pick up her fifth shutout this season. UAH starting goalie Iris Gunnarsdottir (2-7-4) allowed one goal on six saves to file the loss.

"Issy was magic in the goal tonight," said Orr. "She really deserved the shutout. Now we must try to recover quickly to play Union in another tough road match."

UWA will look to continue its road streak against Union on Sunday. The match is set for 2 p.m. in Jackson, Tenn.
