Nicki Gears netted her fourth game-winning goal of the season to knock off Alabama-Huntsville 2-0 in a non-Gulf South Conference match on Friday. Gears' found the goal for her fourth consecutive match in the 84th minute.
"We showed a very disciplined game tonight," said UWA head women's soccer coach
Graeme Orr. "UAH plays an unusual system, but we stuck to our game plan and were patient. I am delighted for the girls. It was a really good team performance, and now we can focus back on conference play."
The victory marks West Alabama's (6-3) third straight shutout win; fifth of the season. UAH (2-5-3) was held scoreless for the fourth time this season as it dropped its second straight loss.
The Tigers outshot the Chargers 15-3 with six shots from Gears. Gears' unassisted goal came six yards out on a ricochet off of a Charger defender.
Fellow junior
Natalie Perry cemented the victory with a goal in the 89th minute on a header off of a pass from freshman Page Almond.
Gears now has nine goals on the year while Perry has four. For Almond, it was her first career assist. Â Â Â Â Â
Starting goalkeeper
Issy Foster improves to 5-3 with her third shutout this season. Foster finished with two saves.
UWA women's soccer will return to its home pitch on Tuesday to take on North Alabama in Gulf South action. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.Â
