UWA Women's Soccer Suffers Third Double OT Loss

Box Score

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State's Nicole Polk netted the golden goal in the 114th minute to hand the West Alabama women's soccer team it's third loss of the season, 2-1, Friday at the VSU Soccer Complex.

All three of West Alabama's (3-3, 0-1) losses this season have come in double overtime to conference opponents. Valdosta State (5-0-2, 3-0-2) is in first place in the Gulf South Conference and ranked 21st nationally.

"I was very proud of the ladies tonight," said UWA head women's soccer coach Graeme Orr. "The stats prove we dominated the first half, and with a couple of things not going our way, we showed great character to come back and tie the game.

"Overtime can be very cruel, however," Orr said. "We need to take the positives from tonight and show that we competed well with the number 21 team in the
country on a very difficult surface to play football on. We will regroup and bounce back Sunday."

The Blazers jumped to an early lead in the 20th minute with a Blakely McClellan goal off of a corner kick by teammate Kayla Robles.

The Tiger's responded in the second half with a goal by Nicki Gears in the 50'. The goal came by way of a Lydia Sutcliffe assist. It was Gears fifth goal of the season and Sutcliffe's second assist.

Freshman starting goalkeeper Issy Foster played all 114 minutes and recorded six saves, her second most of the season.

UWA women's soccer will remain on the road to take on GSC foe West Georgia on Sunday. The match is set for noon (CDT) in Carrolton, Ga.
