UNA Uses 14 Three’s to Win in Overtime at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – North Alabama scored 19 points in overtime on the way to a 92-82 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Sunday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improved UNA to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in GSC play. West Alabama lost its third straight game, dipping to 4-4 and 1-3.

In a game where the score was tied eight times and the lead changed five times, Kelcia Bufkin nailed a pair of free throws with .4 seconds to send the game to overtime tied at 73-73.

West Alabama played the overtime period without its leading scorer, Britney McCloud, who fouled out with 5.5 seconds left in regulation. The senior from Decatur, Ala., finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

"It's tough to play an overtime without Britney, she is obviously our go-to, but that isn't the reason we lost this basketball game," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We didn't guard anybody. When you give up 14 three-pointers that's a recipe for disaster."

North Alabama converted 14-of-29 three-pointers in the game, shooting better from long distance than on regular free throws, 48 percent to 47. West Alabama shot 46 percent from the floor, while UNA won the rebounding battle 44-42.

"We just didn't play with any kind of hunger to beat anybody," Cram said. "We have a one-point lead with just over a minute to play and allow them to make a three off the inbounds pass and then turn it over six seconds later. Just not smart basketball."

Jasmine Hampton chipped in 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds for West Alabama. Kelcia Bufkin and Shameika Hart added 12 points apiece.

Jessica Brown had 21 points to lead North Alabama scoring. Jennifer Towne and Mekena Randle contributed 18 each and Delisa Mandry 14. Towne had nine rebounds.

West Alabama travels to Union (Tenn.) Thursday. North Alabama remains on the road at Lee (Tenn.)
