Union Women Win 20th at UWA

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Amy Philamlee scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Union to a 64-46 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama on Senior Day at Pruitt Hall Saturday.

The victory improves Union to 20-6 overall, 15-5 in the GSC play. West Alabama will take a 5-21 overall record, 2-18 in the league into next week's conference tournament in Birmingham.

Philamlee converted 8-of-11 field goal attempts and the Lady Bulldogs shot 52 percent from the floor, including making 11 three-pointers, in the win. Kelsey Risner chipped in 14 points for Union, who limited West Alabama to just 32 percent shooting.

"Union is arguably the best team in the league. You have Lee, who is probably going to win the league in the regular season, and Union and Delta State at the top," UWA head coach Craig Roden said. "Lee and Union are going to bring a lot to our conference over the next few years."

Jada Williams was the only Tiger to score in double figures, finishing with 14 points. Quentinette Odom grabbed seven rebounds.

West Alabama hopes to conjure up some of its postseason magic from years gone by when the GSC Tournament tips off Thursday at the Pete Hannah Center in Birmingham. UWA will play Delta State Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

The Tigers have played in the GSC tournament title game in each of the last two years, winning the tourney in 2012.

"We still have to finish this thing up at the GSC tournament," Roden said. "We know what to do at tournament time. We have to be better in the off-season and get better."

Even with the tournament still on the horizon, Roden is already looking toward a productive offseason.

"We have to recruit to the spots we have and bring in better players," Roden said. "There are two ways to get better. One is in player development and the other is by recruiting better players. We know we need to get a true point guard and an inside scorer."
