UWA Women Open Season with 66-64 Win Over Spring Hill

LIVINGSTONCatherine Taylor converted a driving layup with 4.1 seconds left to lift West Alabama to a 66-64 women's basketball victory over Spring Hill Sunday at Pruitt Hall.

The game was the season opener for both teams, who will play again Friday in Mobile.

With the score tied at 64-64 with 17.8 seconds left to play, Amee Smith had an opportunity to put Spring Hill in the lead, but missed a pair of free throws. Derrica Chambers missed a three-pointer for the Badgers and Ariel Wilson rebounded with 10.5 to play.

UWA immediately called timeout, and under the new advancement rule in women's college basketball, inbounded the ball to Taylor who drove the left side of the paint for the game winner.

"The play was set up to go to Ariel, but I saw an open lane and decided to go ahead and take the shot," Taylor said. "We didn't play well overall, but we finished and got through it."

West Alabama led by as many as 10 points in a game that saw the score tied 10 times and the lead change hands seven times. With a chance to put the game away early, the Tigers were plagued by turnovers to keep the Badgers in the game.

UWA turned the ball over 15 times in the first quarter and 25 times in the game. Spring Hill scored 28 points off those miscues.

"We are always thankful for a win, but we surely had more than enough turnovers to lose this one," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "I thought we played Southern Miss and Troy harder in our exhibition games than we played today, but we will see over the next couple of days if we can learn from this."

West Alabama shot 41 percent from the floor (24-58) while limiting the Badgers to just 35 percent (24-67). The Tigers won the rebounding battle 46-40.

Latisha McCullum scored 14 points and Moejha Calmes 12 off the bench to lead West Alabama scoring. Wilson chipped in 10 points and collected a game-high seven rebounds.

Camry Johnson was the only Spring Hill player in double figures with 12 points.
