Stillman Hands West Alabama Women First Loss, 71-62

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman College outscored West Alabama 25-9 in the second quarter and made it stand up the rest of the way for a 71-62 women's college basketball victory over UWA Monday at Birthright Gymnasium.
 
The loss was the first of the young season for UWA, who dipped to 3-1. Stillman evened its mark at 3-3. UWA had defeated Stillman 67-57 last Tuesday.
 
West Alabama got off to a 14-8 lead in the first six minutes and led 16-14 after the first quarter. Stillman put together a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of the second period to take a 23-18 lead.
 
West Alabama went the final 8:35 of the first half without making a field goal as Stillman stretched its advantage to 39-25 at halftime.
 
Moejha Calmes scored 11 of her 13 points in the third quarter to keep West Alabama within striking distance. West Alabama limited Stillman to just one field goal over a seven-minute stretch in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 63-56 with 2:32 left on a pair of free throws by Ariel Wilson. It was as close as UWA would get.
 
Wilson led all scorers with 17 points. She and Calmes were the only West Alabama players to score in double digits.
 
Joclyn Ramos scored 15 points to lead four Stillman scorers in double figures. Victoria Douglass chipped in 12, while Eulacia Edwards and Schenia Battle added 11.
 
West Alabama opens Gulf South Conference play Thursday against Mississippi College at Pruitt Hall Gym on the UWA campus. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Stillman is host to Fort Valley State on Wednesday.
