FLORENCE, Ala. – Chloe Richards scored her 30
th goal of the season to lift North Alabama to a 1-0 victory over West Alabama in the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference tournament on Friday.
UNA improves to 15-2-1 overall and advances to the Championship match to face Lee University on Sunday. UWA is eliminated from the tournament with a 10-6-2 record.
Richards' goal came in the 17
th minute on an assist from Beatriz Fernandes. Richards finished the match 2-for-8 shots on-goal, while the Lions led the overall shot margin 19-4. Haliegh McDuff came off the bench to register the Tigers only shot on-goal. She ended 1-for-2.
Shelby Thorton (13-0-1) made one save to pick up the win, while
Issy Foster (15-2-1) made six saves to take the loss. For Foster, it was her 17
th goal allowed this season through 204 shots faced. The junior ends the season with the new school single-season record of nine shutouts.
"I am very proud of this group. They have worked extremely hard this year," said UWA head coach
Graeme Orr.
"It wasn't great conditions to play soccer in tonight, but I thought we were the team creating the best opportunities late in the game. I want to thank the players and the seniors for their service and commitment."
