Southern Miss Topples UWA in Exhibition Women’s Basketball

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Jayla King scored 20 points and Caitlin Jenks collected 15 rebounds to lead Southern Mississippi to a 90-49 women's basketball exhibition victory over West Alabama Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum.
 
In an exhibition for both teams, the NCAA Division I Golden Eagles built a 31-21 lead after the first quarter and led 53-27 at the half after limiting West Alabama to just six points in the second period. USM then allowed just six West Alabama points in the third quarter.
 
Five players scored in double figures for Southern Miss. Following King was Brittanny Davis with 13. Lashyra Cotton, Brittny Norris and Jenks all chipped in 11 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 53 percent from the floor (38-of-71).
 
Ariel Wilson led West Alabama scorers with 17 points. Catherine Taylor chipped in 11. Sydney King had five rebounds to lead UWA in that category.
 
Playing without seniors Jessica Voyles and Latisha McCullum due to injury, the Tigers managed to shoot just 31 percent from the floor. USM outrebounded UWA 43-25. Southern Miss blocked seven shots.
 
West Alabama plays two more exhibition games next week before opening the regular season Sunday against Spring Hill at home. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
