UWA and Shorter Split in GSC Tennis, Tiger Men Win 7-2

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama and Shorter split a pair of Gulf South Conference tennis matches Friday at the Young Tennis Center on the UWA campus. The Tiger men won, 7-2, while the Lady Hawks beat UWA, 8-1.

Playing in the final home match of the 2015 season, the West Alabama men improved to 7-4 overall, 5-2 in the GSC. Shorter dropped to 4-9 and 1-4. The loss by the UWA women leaves them at 6-5 and 4-4, while Shorter is now 9-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.

The home matches were the last for Tiger seniors Adam Drysdale, Manuel Grossmann and Kathryn Adams.

The UWA men's team got off to a fast start by sweeping the doubles courts. Drysdale and Andrii Stratilenko won the No. 1 court, while Grossmann and Christopher Woods took care of No. 2. Caspar Schuetze and Nicolai Jochamowitz completed the sweep with a win on the third court.

Shorter won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles before the Tigers rebounded with Woods, Schuetze, Grossmann and Jochamowitz taking courts three through six, respectively.

Sandra Florez was West Alabama's lone winner, taking No. 4 singles, 8-5, over Aurore Beltrando.

West Alabama concludes the regular season with a trio of road games next week, beginning with a GSC match Tuesday at Lee University before closing out in Valdosta, Ga., against St. Leo and Valdosta State on April 11 and 12, respectively.
