Tide Cruises Past West Alabama in Women’s Exhibition Basketball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama had four players score in double figures and took advantage of 32 West Alabama turnovers to cruise to an 86-34 women's college basketball exhibition victory over the Tigers Friday at Coleman Coliseum.

Both the Tigers and Tide open the regular season Friday. West Alabama travels to Spring Hill. Alabama is host to New Orleans.

Meoshonti Knight and Ashley Williams scored 16 points each to lead the Crimson Tide. Jordan Lewis followed with 14 points and Quanteria Bolton chipped in 12. Nine of 11 players who played for the Tide scored.

Alabama limited West Alabama to single digit points in the first and third quarters. The Tigers managed just 11 points in the second period and 10 in the fourth. UWA shot just 25 percent from the floor and managed just four trips to the free throw line, making two.

"I am disappointed in the way we played," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We were intimidated. They pressured us and we succumbed.

"I didn't expect us to win, but I am really disappointed in the way we played, in our lack of effort," Cram said. "We couldn't even get into our sets offensively against one of the more athletic Alabama teams I have seen in a long time."

Alabama led 45-20 at the half, thanks in large part to a 7:41 scoring drought by West Alabama late in the first quarter and early in the second.

Alabama stretched its lead to 60-20 with 5:28 left in the third quarter. At that point, the Crimson Tide had scored 28 points off 26 West Alabama turnovers. Alabama led 69-24 after three quarters, outscoring West Alabama 22-4 in the third period.

Alabama ended up with 34 points off UWA turnovers. UWA did not manage a bucket off just six Tide miscues. Alabama outscored West Alabama 48-8 in the paint and 28-0 on fast break points.

One bright spot for West Alabama was on the boards. The Tigers outrebounded Alabama 43-42. Sydney King and Kierra Groce had six rebounds each to lead the Tigers. Shaquera Wade had nine rebounds for Alabama.

Ariel Wilson scored nine points to lead UWA scoring after playing in foul trouble for most of the game. West Alabama committed 31 fouls to Alabama's 11 in the game.
