UNA Stays Unbeaten with 68-60 GSC Women’s Win over UWA

FLORENCE, Ala. – Ivy Wallen poured in 25 points and North Alabama scored 22 points off a season-high 29 West Alabama turnovers to notch a 68-60 Gulf South Conference victory over the Tigers Thursday at Flowers Hall.

The win kept North Alabama undefeated at 8-0 overall, 2-0 in GSC play. West Alabama dipped to 3-5 and 0-2. The Lions have won six of the last seven meetings with UWA.

"We got better tonight, but we are still not there," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "Turnovers told the tale, and points off them. We also have to get to where we score more points inside."

North Alabama led 30-25 at the half, but stretched its lead to 16 points with 7:22 left in the game. West Alabama rallied to cut the Lion led to six points on a Jenna Bradberry layup with 3:29 left and 66-60 when Ariel Wilson converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 6.8 seconds left.

"We refused to quit and fought back. I am proud of that," Cram said. "We have to stay positive and knock those turnovers down. North Alabama is a good basketball team who plays good, hard defense and loves to shoot the threes."

The Lions attempted 29 three-pointers, making eight while West Alabama won the rebounding battle, 46-33.

Wallen was 7-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. KeKe Gunter chipped in 14 points and Jaclyn Heath 11 for the Lions. Michaela DeKilder grabbed nine rebounds.

Wilson scored 17 points and collected nine rebounds to lead West Alabama. Kierra Groce had 11 points and seven rebounds in her return to Florence. Groce transferred to West Alabama from UNA. Catherine Taylor scored 10 points for the Tigers.

West Alabama continues its road trip with a 2 p.m. tipoff at Alabama Huntsville Saturday. UNA is host to West Georgia on Monday.
