CLEVELAND, Miss. – Carah Nunez brought in four runs on two hits to help lift Delta State to a 9-2 victory over West Alabama Softball in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday.
Delta State completes the series sweep to improve to 14-4 overall and 0-6 in the GSC. West Alabama drops to 7-8 and 0-6.
"This was really a tough road trip. Today a shift in momentum proved to be more than we could overcome," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson. "Through four innings we had momentum on our side and we held them to three hits, but it shifted in the fifth and we were unable to recover.'
The Tigers capitalized on a drop fly ball by DSU in the top of the third inning, scoring
Brittany Anderson and
Ashlend Rodriguez to take a 2-1 lead.
Nunez's first hit came as an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to put the Statesmen back on top 3-2. Delta State combined for five runs in the fifth, with Nunez belting another double to bring in three runs. Morgan Kazerooni brought in one last run in the sixth with an RBI single.
Katie Justice (5-1) struck out two, allowed eight hits but no earned runs to pick up the win in the circle for Delta State.
Amanda Medders (2-3) allowed seven runs on seven hits through 4.2 innings to take the loss.
"Looking forward we have to find ways to avoid the "big inning" and redirect the energy and get the momentum on our side," Atkinson said. "Our ball club is growing and right now we are experiencing some growing pains, but I know they have tons of fight in them and they will answer the challenge next week."
West Alabama Softball returns to action when it takes on Mississippi College in double header on Feb. 27. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.Â
