West Alabama Opens Tennis Season With 5-0 Victories

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Both the men and women's tennis teams from the University of West Alabama opened the 2016 regular season with 5-0 victories over Tuskegee Tuesday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.

Both West Alabama teams are 1-0. Tuskegee's women fall to 0-2 and the men are 0-1.

"I was pleased with the way we handled things today, especially on a day when the weather conditions for tennis were less than ideal," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "Sandra Florez started her senior season strong and I was pleased with the way our doubles teams played."

The match got off to a solid start for UWA with the Tigers winning all five doubles matches. The women's team won all three while the 38th ranked UWA men took two with No. 3 doubles not being played.

Amina Mukhametshina and Liliana Araucz won in women's No. 1 doubles, 8-2, while Andrea Tomassone and Georgina Morrall posted an 8-5 victory in women's No. 2. Evelyn Moreno and Sandra Florez completed the women's doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory at No. 3.

Caspar Schuetze and Henrik Sinkko were 8-0 winners at men's No. 1 doubles. Christopher Wood and Julius Kaverinen were 8-0 winners at No. 2.

Mukhametshina defeated Monica Thomas (6-0, 6-2) at No. 1 singles before Flores clinched the match with a 6-0 6-0 win over Taylor Wilson. The remainder of the women's singes matches were not finished due to the cold, windy weather.

Kaverinen defeated Brandon Sewell (6-2, 6-0) to win No. 2 men's singles. Wood was a winner (6-0, 6-0) over Michael Graham in No. 3 singles. Tuskegee defaulted at No. 6 singles to clinch the match victory for UWA. Singles matches at No. 1, 4 and 5 were not finished.

West Alabama opens the Gulf South Conference portion of its schedule by hosting West Florida Thursday. The West Florid amen are currently ranked No. 4 in the nation and the Argo women are No. 6. Match time for both the men and women is 1 p.m. Admission to UWA is free of charge.
