LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Ashley Smart and
Kristen Bittle each went 3-of-3 with a home run, a double and 3 runs batted in, and
Libby Davis hit her fourth homer of the season as West Alabama softball completed the Gulf South Conference series sweep over Christian Brothers, taking game three 12-2 on Monday.
The Tigers improve to 10-15 overall while moving to 3-12 in the GSC. The Buccaneers fall to 6-21 and 2-13.
"It was nice to get this win today and finish out the conference sweep," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson.
"We got off to a little bit of a slow start today, but once we started seeing the pitchers, especially the second time through the lineup, we were just putting the barrel on the ball. We commanded the strike zone better today with our pitching. I think there are areas for everyone to improve, but we'll enjoy this win today and get ready to work tomorrow."
Smart got on base with a double in the top of the second inning, setting up Bittle for a 2-run shot over the left-center field fence to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Christian Brothers brought one run around in the bottom of the second and one more in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
Audrey Diekmann opened up the fourth inning with a lead-off single, advancing to second with a sacrifice bunt from
Sarah Miles. Smart and Bittle each picked up one RBI to put UWA ahead 4-2.
Ashley Stassin earned two RBI's in the top of the fifth and scored on a 2-run homer from Smart, extending the Tiger's lead to 8-2. With two outs, Bittle got on base with a double and scored on a throwing error, extending UWA's lead by one run. Davis culminated the Tiger's two-out rally with a 3-run blast over left field.
Andrea Edmonds (5-3) came in for
Amanda Medders in the top of the third, giving up just one run on two hits to earn the win. Kasey Beekman (19-13) gave up four runs on six hits before coming out of the game in the bottom of the fourth to take the loss.
West Alabama will face North Alabama in a three-game GSC series with a double header on Saturday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
