Tigers Win GSC Series in Come-From-Behind Fashion

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama came from behind to defeat Union University 5-2 in Gulf South Conference softball action at the UWA Softball Complex Saturday.

West Alabama, having opened the series with a double-header split on Friday, wins the series and improves to 13-20 overall and 5-15 in the GSC. Union falls to 6-29 and 3-18.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI double by Rachel Ridolfi and a one run single by Whitney Christian.

"Today was great teamwork, everybody coming in and doing their part," said UWA head coach Will Atkinson. "Medders comes in late and hits a ground ball through the infield and gave us that little bit of insurance. It's fun winning. I felt like we were a better ball club than yesterday afternoon. They came back today, showed some resilience and played really well."

It didn't take long for UWA to respond as the Tigers went on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. West Alabama took advantage of a Union error for its first run before an RBI single by Libby Davis and an RBI sac fly from Ashlend Rodriguez claimed the lead.

The Tigers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Bulldogs walked Ashley Stassin for the fourth time on the day with the bases loaded and Amanda Medders pinch hit to bring in another run on a double.

Davis finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Ridolfi led Union at the plate going 2-for-3.

Andrea Edmonds (6-5) entered in the fourth, replacing Ashley Stassin, to pick up the win. She gave up no runs, two hits and struck out two. Haley Cummings (3-12) pitched through all six innings for Union, allowing three earned runs on seven hits to take the loss.

"Good things happen when you throw strikes," Atkinson said.

"Both teams played pretty good softball today. Both pitchers gave their teams a chance. I thought Stassin came out and gave us some really strong innings. Then Edmonds came in and we got a lead. She threw a lot of strikes and let the defense go to work. We gave ourselves a chance at the end."

West Alabama Softball will return to action on Wednesday to take on Columbus State in a non-conference double-header. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m. in Columbus, Ga.
