BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – West Alabama Softball snapped a nine game losing streak with a 9-3 win over Miles College in game one before dropping game two 3-1 in a non-conference doubleheader at A.H. Parker High School on Wednesday.
West Alabama moves to 7-15 overall. Miles College is 7-16.
UWA tallied hits in every inning but one in the first game, with five of its 12 total hits as extra base hits. Miles College had six with three in the fourth inning.
Sarah Miles and
Audrey Diekmann hit back-to-back doubles as Miles scored the Tigers first run to put the Tigers up 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
Ashlend Rodriguez extended the lead to two runs on an RBI double in the third, before scoring on a sacrifice bunt by
Lacey Santiago.
In the fourth, Deikmann scored on a throwing error by Miles College to make it 4-0. Rodriguez posted an RBI single, and
Ashley Stassin stretched the lead to 7-0 with a two run double.
Jamellya Ducker put the Golden Bears on the board with a single in the bottom of the fourth, followed by a two run double by Ashlee Alexander in the same inning that cut UWA's lead to 7-3.
Diekmann belted her third home run of the season to lift the Tigers to a 9-3 lead in the fifth.
Rodriguez finished game one 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Diekmann totaled three RBI and two runs, ending 2-for-3.
Andrea Edmonds (3-3) picked up the win, striking out six and allowing three runs through six innings. Kendruena McPhereson (1-5) entered in the third, giving up six earned runs to take the loss.
"It was nice to see us string some hits together in the first game," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson. "Andrea came out and commanded the strike zone and gave us a chance to make plays and the outcome was favorable for us."
In game two, Miles took a 3-0 lead on a hit, a Tiger error and a walk with the bases loaded.
Libby Davis gave UWA its only run on an RBI double, bringing in Santiago. Diekmann added two more hits in three at-bats in the second game.
Talana Brown (2-5) took the win for Miles, allowing just two hits and striking out four in five innings. Amanada Medders (2-7) picked up the loss, giving up two earned runs through four innings.
"In game two the energy started off lackluster, and it continued that way throughout the game," said Atkinson. "There was never a sense of urgency, and I think that's where we have to improve. We need to have a sense of urgency from the first pitch to the last. It was two totally different teams from game one to game two. Great energy in the first game and in game two we fell flat."
West Alabama Softball will return to action when it takes on Christian Brothers University in a three game series beginning in a double-header on Saturday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
