Argo's Scratch Out Three Runs to Down Tigers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida pieced together enough hits to score on three straight innings and complete the Gulf South Conference Softball series sweep with a 3-0 win over West Alabama on Sunday.

West Florida stretches its win streak to 13 to improve to 33-11 overall and 19-8 in the GSC. West Alabama falls to 16-27 and 6-21.

Rhiannon Sassmon doubled to left center field in the bottom of the third inning to score Emily Pettigrew and put UWF ahead 1-0. Pettigrew brought in the Argonauts second run in the fourth on a fielder's choice to score Caitlin Steel.

Sassmon picked up the third run on the Tiger's second fielding error of the day in the fifth. Sassmon finished 1-for-2 with a run and RBI. Pettigrew ended 1-for-4 with a run and RBI.

Audrey Diekmann, Sarah Miles and Brittany Anderson recorded the only hits for UWA, as Diekmann and Anderson each went 1-for-2 and Miles 1-for-3.

Kalyn Chapman (16-5) struck out five Tiger batters and allowed two of the three hits through five innings. Becca Taylor entered in the sixth to strike out two more hitters through seven batters faced.

"Give a lot of credit to their pitching staff. Every kid they rolled out took care of the softball and commanded the strike zone, and we just weren't able to square it up," said UWA head coach Will Atkinson. "You hate to lose, but todays effort and the way I feel about leaving the yard compared to yesterday is day and night. We came out and gave our best effort, but they just beat us."

Andrea Edmonds (8-7) took the loss for UWA, opening the first four innings. She gave up two earned runs, walked four and struck out one batter before being replaced by Ashley Stassin in the fifth. Stassin closed out the final inning and a half not allowing a hit and walking only one batter.

"I felt like today's effort in the pitching circle was among the best we've had all year," Atkinson said.

"They scattered six hits across six innings. They didn't give up many balls that were hit hard, and they gave us a chance all day long. If we make two plays, it's a 1-0 ballgame heading into seventh, and one run is a bit easier to scratch than three."

West Alabama Softball will return to action on Wednesday when it takes on Spring Hill College in a non-conference double-header. Game one is set to start at 3 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
